Lord Hastings is selling his ancestral home, Seaton Delaval Hall, for £13.2m.
Now the National Trust is hoping to buy the hall and its surroundings to transform them into a major cultural centre.
Fiona Reynolds, director-general of the trust said: "Seaton Delaval Hall has been at the heart of the local community for centuries and we want he public to tell us what its future should be.
"There are many exciting possibilities for its use - as an exhibition space, a base for community activities, a venue for concerts and entertainment, for sporting events, and as a green lung offering infinite opportunities and community projects across the wider estate."
The National Trust has guaranteed the acquisition of the site, on the condition that £6.3m is raised to match the contribution of the trust.
Now the general public and local businesses are being encouraged to fundraise for the cause.
David Ronn, the trust's regional director for the north east said: "Seaton is no typical country house.
"It promises to be a fantastic and romantic venue for all sorts or activities.
"We want everyone to get involved in deciding its use, but first we want them to help us save it."
