Our Mini is like a mobile disco inside. This is not good.

When you live with a car for an extended period, it’s often the little details that start to grate. Such as, on our Mini Clubman, the LED lights around the big, round infotainment screen in the centre of the dash.

These are not ordinary LED lights. They are multi-coloured LED lights that seem to flash and change colour no matter what you’re doing. They’ll flash when you indicate. They’ll change colour when you alter driving mode. Heavens, they even flash when you turn up the stereo.

By day, it’s ignorable. By night, it’s downright infuriating. And, at times, seriously off-putting. Not least because, unlike the rest of the dash, they don’t dim when the headlights are on.

They were literally driving us to distraction. We even considered reaching for the duct tape to cover them up. After weeks at the wheel, we’ve now finally found a sub-menu that allows you to adjust their brightness.

Better still, you can turn them off completely. Needless to say, we’ve now done that…

It’s allowed us to concentrate on the rest of the Clubman’s interior. It’s a fine place to be. Classy and very well built, it’s at last a genuine alternative to the Audi A3. It’s roomy, too – not as spacious as an A3 Sportback, but not far off.

Best of all, it packs in lots of Mininess, so it’s a more interesting place to be. Well, now we’ve murdered the disco lights, that is.
