ASHINGTON is set to get it’s very own skate park thanks to a £170,000 grant from the Wansbeck Fairshare at the Community Foundation.

The announcement was made on Monday afternoon following a year long consultation, including site visits and meetings with stakeholders like Northumberland County Council, North Seaton Community Association, the local scout group and young people who are potential users of the park.

The new state of the art Skate Park is set to be built at Paddock Wood and Groundwork North East will be administering the grant and coordinating the works.

Gemma Bone from the organisation said: “It’s so exciting that the skate park is going to be built.

“It will be such a well-used facility and just what this area needs to give young people a meaningful activity that they can develop and grow their skills in.

“I really can’t wait to see the finished product and young people whizzing about on their BMX’s and skateboards.”

It is hoped that the skate park once completed will help to raise the aspirations of children and young people and enable them to develop their skills and experience and support their progression as part of Fairshare’s objectives. This project also has the potential to bring together the community of North Seaton to involve them in the development of Paddock Wood.

Chris Drinkwater sits on the Fairshare panel at the Community Foundation. He added: “I am delighted that the skate park is going ahead with grant funding from Wansbeck Fairshare.

“Following the consultation with the local people and the statutory authorities it was clear that there is a need for a resource such as a skate park for young people in the local area. I’m looking forward to seeing the construction progress and the opening of the park in summer.”

The Wansbeck Fairshare Fund in now coming to an end having awarded grants totalling over £850,000 since 2005, however, the Community Foundation is always on the lookout for quality applications from small grants under £5,000 from local community and voluntary organisations for the other funds it looks after.
