Children given roads warning

YOUNGSTERS are being urged to take care when playing outside during the summer.

The safety message from Northumbria Police comes at the start of the school holidays when more children are out on the streets, playing football, with friends or on their bikes.

Police are reminding youngsters to take care around the roads and are urging motorists to be extra cautious.

Acting Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt, from Northumbria Police’s operations command department, said: “The school holidays means there’s lots of children playing out in the street and on their bikes.

“It’s vital they take care around the roads.

“They need to stop, look and listen before walking or cycling into the road and make sure the road is clear before they cross. They should use pedestrian crossings wherever possible.

“I’d urge parents to speak to their children to make sure they are aware of how important it is to stay safe when playing outdoors.

“We want young people to enjoy their school holidays and by taking care when playing around the region’s roads they can ensure they have a safe and happy one.”
