Cricket star hands out fund grants

A SCOUT and a cricket club are in the money, thanks to Wansbeck Centre for Voluntary Service’s Vantage Fund.

England cricketer Steve Harmison presented Bomarsund Welfare Cricket Club with £125 to help it pay for three young people to be trained up as coaches.

The Ashington-born star also gave £100 to Matthew Keetch to help fund an expedition to Ukraine next year with the scouts.

The Vantage Fund was set up in memory of the late Sheila McGuckin, a former chief executive of the centre.

Grants are available to people living in Wansbeck, and this year they are being given to projects contributing to the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

This project is supported by the News Post Leader and also has the backing of the Duchess of Northumberland, Jane Percy.

Centre chief executive Anne Lyall said: “We are delighted to be able to start and give out grants from the kind donations that we have received from so many local businesses and voluntary organisations.”

Previous beneficiaries of the fund include Bedlington Sporting Club, Newbiggin Boxing Club and the Ashington Junior Eagles football club.

The funding is available to an individual or a group or organisation living in the Wansbeck area and grants range from between £50 to £500.
