A fair deal for all not just the few

I READ with interest the letter from Mr Stewart (News Post Leader, December 28), regarding the proposed supermarket for Seaton Delaval.

Things change, whether we like it or not, and there are few things existing today that can go back 60 years in this town.

The proposal, and that is all it is at the moment, to open a new supermarket (and it wouldn’t be that big) would benefit the shopper initially as the Co-op has had a monopoly for years and prices are way above those supermarkets mentioned in West Monkseaton and Cramlington.

Competition would drive prices down and the shopper would benefit – monopolies mean the only one to gain is the seller.

The good folk of Delaval who don’t have a car have no option but to shop and pay locally, unless they use public transport, in which case they would still have to lug a potentially heavy weekly shop home on the bus in all weathers.

Delaval has expanded a lot in the past 30 years with many more houses to cater for, so let us see what happens.

Of course, those of us who have lived here for many years remember well the Shell petrol station in Astley Road.

This was closed down as presumably those who wanted to refuel found it cheaper in West Monkseaton and Cramlington, where competition kept prices lower than here.

Let’s have a fair deal for all, not just the few.

Totally agree that a shop at this location would be of huge benefit to the village. The campaign against the Tesco store is being organised by large by the established local businesses in the village that dont want any competition.

Just to add to this that New Hartley would benefit from a decent store at Delaval, they're limited to one small shop or taking the bus all the way to Blyth for the none car owning households.
