Residents face increase twice

REGARDING the article on the council tax rise to be imposed by Cramlington Town Council (News Post Leader, January 19) only 72 per cent this year, readers might like to bear in mind that the purpose of such a rise is to pay for increased duties imposed on the town council by Northumberland County Council.

There will be, however, no parallel decrease in the county’s council tax to reflect the delegation of those duties, and hence costs to the town council.

Cramlington Town Council residents are, therefore, being hit by a 72 per cent increase in the tax to be raised by the town council and a, de facto, increase from the county at the same time.

The common factor is that both councils are controlled by the Liberal Democrats.

Why cant we just get rid of the town and parish councils in this area, Im sure there must be a way of doing it. We did not want any of them to start with, they were imposed on us. They are just another tier of bureaucracy, a way of getting more money from us then tell us its "empowerment". What a load of rubbish, they are just another form of extracting money from people who cant afford it, a form of double taxation. Why dont we just wake up and do something about it. They just spout a load of hot air and when you want them to stand up and be counted they just hide behind some council jargin or "I'm on the planning committe" type of excuse. Remember it was the old "Blyth Borough" and "Wansbeck" councils that were in power when THEY decided we had to have them. I'm sick of the sight of all of them.

Yes indeed. But is anyone surprised at Liberal Democrats saying and doing anything for a few votes. Remember pledge they made about not increasing tution fees before the election and then increasing tution fees to over £9000 per year once they votes were in the bag? Leyton Rahman
