Restrictions to eradicate traffic issue near school

NEW traffic restrictions will be imposed to stop problem parking around a Blyth school.

Northumberland County Council’s planning and environment committee has agreed to impose a No Waiting restriction in Fulmar Drive, as well as a Prohibition of Driving Except For Access notice in Eider Close.

Both streets are currently used by parents dropping off and collecting pupils from the Bede Academy South site in South Beach.

The problems arose when the academy was built to replace South Beach First School in 2009 in the switch to the two-tier education system, which saw pupil numbers more than double from around 300 to 670.

Measurers were introduced at the academy’s opening to control the traffic, such as new traffic signals, a 20mph speed limit, car park modifications and restrictions on access to Heron Close and Shearwater Way.

However, parents are now parking in neighbouring streets.

Consultation was carried out in October about the intention of the county council to impose additional restrictions and after 232 letters were sent out 71 residents responded to say they were in favour. Only five people were against the move.

Requests were made to create additional parking facilities by removing existing grass sections, but they were rejected due to budget constraints.
