THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1960

THE dramatic rescue of the crew of the collier Holderness, wrecked last year off the East Pier in Blyth, had its sequel in the Star and Garter Hotel last week. Mr Tom Fawcus, coxswain of the Blyth Lifeboat, Sir Winston Churchill, received the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's testimonial vellum "for his determined efforts and bravery in rescuing four members of the crew".

MRS Jean Tate, elected first woman chairman of Blyth Chamber of Trade, this week strongly criticised present legislation which allowed mobile shops to operate "at all hours".

THE 67,000 Longhirst Drift pithead baths, which were officially opened at the weekend, have been warmly welcomed by miners having to travel from Bedlingtonshire and Seaton Valley.

THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1985

STAFF at Blyth DHSS offices staged a two-day strike this week over a breakdown in a national overtime ban. More than 60 employees – members of the Civil and Public Service Association – took part in the strike action in protest at colleagues who had defied their union's ruling.

MODERNISATION work costing more than 300,000 has just been completed at Presto supermarket in Regent Street, Blyth.

A DISTURBINGLY high number of people are not eating because of lack of money, Blyth Valley Council's environmental health and control committee was told.
