Setting sights on helping charity
DONATIONS are being sought as a national chain sets its sights on helping a regional charity.
Specsavers have launched their Christmas appeal by joining with children’s charity the Toma Fund.
Customers are being urged to drop off a gift at their local Specsavers branch – with outlets in Cramlington, Blyth and Morpeth – before December 15 which will then be donated to young people undergoing cancer treatment at Newcastle’s RVI prior to Christmas.
Toma Fund – set up in remembrance of young Jordan Thompson who played for the Newcastle United academy but died from leukaemia in September 2005 at the age of 15 – supports children and young adults aged from 0 to 24 suffering from cancer.
David Stockton, regional chair of Specsavers said: “We are delighted to support the Toma Fund particularly at this time of year.
“To have a youngster in the hospital at Christmas is quite unimaginable and is something that affects the whole family.
“Some of our staff have had family members affected by cancer, hence choosing to support this charity.
“We are hoping the public are inspired by this appeal and buy one extra gift this year for those who need it the most.”
Andrea Thompson, Jordan’s mother and chief executive of Toma Fund, said: “I can’t thank Specsavers enough for launching this appeal.
“As a mother who has watched her son undergoing cancer treatment, I was overwhelmed by their generosity and I am sure that both the children and parents will appreciate the gifts.”
