STUDENTS at Northumberland College had an unexpected half day last week after suspected explosive material was found on campus.
The college was closed all afternoon on Wednesday, March 18, after a small amount of what was believed to be 'dummy' explosive was discovered.

The material was used as a detonator for display purposes when the college used to run courses for the mining industry.

The Ashington campus was evacuated as a precaution, and police and the Army's Explosive Ordnance Department from Catterick attended the scene.

Principal Rachel Ellis-Jones said: "Although it is understood this was dummy display material, the police advised that it should be treated as live.

"We evacuated the college for the remainder of the day purely as a precaution."
