The volunteers from Newbiggin RNLI lifeboat station were called out one night earlier this year after reports of a person possibly in difficulties in the sea at the south end of the bay.
The lifeboat was quickly in the search area, and after battl
ing misty conditions, they saw a shape in the gloom with a crew member deployed to assist.
Unfortunately, the outcome of the rescue saw the crew pull out a bunch of balloons which had been used by Harvey's furniture store to promote a sale.
A few days later, a letter was sent to the company telling them about the rescue and the work of the RNLI in Newbiggin.
In the 157-year history of the lifeboat station, it was the first time a bunch of balloons had been saved from the water, a difference to the people or dogs rescued.
And volunteers at Newbiggin RNLI were overjoyed when officials from Harvey's wrote back and offered a generous donation.
Karen Broderick, marketing manager, said in sending the generous donation: "We certainly got a smile on our faces when the report came in from the lifeboat.
"We recognise the valuable work the RNLI carries out and hope our donation will help such a cause."
Richard Martin, of Newbiggin RNLI lifeboat, said: "We appreciate the support given to us by Harvey's and the money will be used to help with the ongoing running costs of this voluntary lifesaving service."
