A WANSBECK School has had its art teaching recognised in a national award.
Welbeck First School in North Seaton has been given the ArtSmart gold award after passing the qualification's rigorous assessments.

The school became the first locally to earn the honour after it proved to the ArtSmart organisers that it had leading arts provision.

Headteacher Helen Brown said that passing the ArtSmart strict inspections on visual arts, drama and dance, which came with a 60-page application form, was a "huge accomplishment".

Ms Brown said: "The children are very appreciative of the quality of art provision we have in school.

"There's lots of things going on at Wellbeck which allow the children to express themselves.

"The quality of their work is exceptional, as soon as you walk in the school you notice the colour.

"It's such a sunny place to work."
