HUNDREDS of people braved the chilly north east wind at the weekend to run a mile in aid of Sport Relief in Ashington.
Two separate mile events were held on Sunday at Hirst High School in Ashington, with nearly 300 taking part in total.

Headteacher Lesley Craig said: "I'd like to thank everyone who supported the event.

"We had a good response from the local community.

"It was the first time Sport Relief had online registering and this caused a few hiccups with registration.

"However, a big thank you to all those who came to run, some people registering early on the day and returning for their 2.30pm mile – both mile events were sell-outs."

Ex-England basketball star Carl Miller was the star guest who started the mile runs.

Free massage and health checks were on offer in addition to other sporting activities to make the day a success.

Lesley Dalby, publicity and promotions director at Hirst, said: "We were caused a few problems in the morning putting up the stage due to the high winds.

"At one point I thought it was going to have to be brought down.

"However, the wind lessened and we were given the go ahead by the risk assessment officer."

All the money raised at the weekend will go to help people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.
