A CHINESE man has appeared in court charged with the murder of an Iranian businessman and the attempted murder of a woman in Blyth.
Zhong Guo, 42, of no fixed abode, appeared at South East Northumberland Law Courts today charged with the murder of Shahdad Pouresmaeilieh.
Guo was also charged with the attempted murder of 45-year-old Yang Fang Zhang and for possessing a firearm to endanger life.
Mr Pouresmaeilieh and Ms Zhang were found in a flat above the Dragon House takeaway in Elliott Street, Newsham, Blyth, late on Thursday, March 20.
In a ten minute court hearing, Guo only spoke to confirm his name, age and address and listened as the proceedings were told to him through an interpreter.
Magistrates remanded Guo in custody, to appear before Newcastle Crown Court on Monday, March 31.
Mr Pouresmaeilieh had lived in the area for the past 12 years, and officers say they have recovered a firearm from the scene, which they think was involved in the killing.
In a statement issued by police, Mr Pouresmaeilieh's family said: "Shahdad was a well-respected businessman, with interests in Newcastle, and around the area.
"He was a gentle, considerate person and our family are devastated at his violent untimely death."
A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Pouresmaeilieh, who lived in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
