A BLYTH man who pleaded guilty to perjury after he lied in court about his ill fated marriage to his Russian bride has been given a suspended sentence.
Ronald Nelson, 59, of Sidney Street in Blyth met the Russian national on a dating website in 2004.

She moved to England and on April 28, 2006 they got married and lived together in Blyth. Seven months later they split up and she left the marital home.

On February 15, 2007 Ronald Nelson appeared before His Honour Judge Bullock at North Shields County Court and gave evidence in divorce proceedings.

On April 5, 2007 the judge issued a decree absolute of nullity.

On April 30, 2007 his 'former' wife initiated divorce proceeding against Ronald Nelson via her solicitors who informed her that Ronald had already filed for an annulment.

On August 2007 Ronald Nelson was arrested on suspicion of perjury and forgery.

DC Dave Kernaghan of North Shields CID said: "This is a highly unusual case involving an international love story which went sour.

"The proverb 'marry in haste and repent at leisure' is not valid here. But the reverse does seems more apt, attempt to divorce in haste and repent at leisure.

"This individual was clearly in a hurry to release himself from his marriage but in doing so lied to the court and must now face the consequences."

Nelson was given a six-month suspended sentence at Newcastle Crown Court today.
