A MAN whose decapitated corpse was discovered on a railway track in Northumberland took his own life, an inquest has ruled.
Andrew Chapman's body was found in a cess area beside the tracks near Belford on December 5 last year.
A passing freight train driver made the grim discovery and alerted the emergency services.
East Coast mainline trains capable of speeds up to 125mph use the line regularly, and were immediately suspended after the body was found.
Fifty-five-year-old Mr Chapman, from South Glebe, Whalton, near Morpeth had been receiving treatment for depression, and had problems with alcohol.
Toxicology tests revealed he had 163mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood - the equivalent to around five or six pints of beer, or seven measures of spirits.
A note to his ex-partner was found in his car, which had been abandoned on a nearby railway bridge.
An inquest into his death at Morpeth County Court last week ruled that Mr Chapman had killed himself.
