THE Conservative Party has come out on top in the Castle Morpeth division for the new single authority in Northumberland.
The Tories won six of the 11 seats up for grabs on the new Northumberland council, which will come into force on April 1, 2009.

They held three wards while gaining three others from the Liberal Democrats.

The Lib Dems meanwhile took two wards from Labour, Morpeth Stobhill and Pegswood.

It was a bad day all round in the borough for the Labour Party as also conceded Lynmouth to Independent candidate Milburn Douglas.

The results mean Labour will have representation on the new unitary authority in Castle Morpeth.

The 11 seats will be made up of six Conservaties, four Lib Dems and one Independent.

The first resulted to be announced from Castle Morpeth was in the Morpeth Stobhill ward.

Liberal Democrat Ian Lindley polled 914 votes.

In Lynemouth Milburn Douglas was elected with just over 50 per cent of the vote.

He saw took 60 per cent of the electorate from 1,524 votes with a 49.9 per cent turnout.
