Firefighter Stevie Clark, from New Hartley, and his driving instructor pal David Egdell, who lives in Monkseaton, were inspired by David's wife Angela who works at St Oswald's to raise money for its work with the terminally ill.
And now the pair have kicked off a year of fundraising by holding an event at El Castano in Jesmond, hosted by the restaurant's owner and fellow member of North Shields Poly running club, Bernie Hemy.
Stevie said: "The night was a resounding success and I would like to thank all those that attended the event for the support they gave and the positive feedback I received."
Stevie and David are hoping to initially raise £5,000 by the time they leave for their Transylvanian adventure in June next year.
The challenge will see them trek through the Transylvanian Alps, conquering the highest peaks in Romania and cycle through the medieval villages of Transylvania before volunteering at the Casa Sperantei Hospice in Brasov.
Money raised from sponsorship will go to St Oswald's and the rest will go to the fire service.
