CHILDREN and their parents have been taking tips on cooking at an after school club in order to learn about a healthier lifestyle.
The youngsters at Hawthorn Church of England School welcomed their mums and dads into their classroom to make soup as part of an Extended Services Initiative being run in Ashington.

The event is part of a sustainable project that was launched at Hawthorn, where families work and learn together.

The families learn how to prepare food, hygiene issues and how to prepare and make healthy, low fat, economical meals.

The project started after money from the Extended Services Initiative was used to buy relevant equipment, with celebrity chef Mark Earnden then launching the project.

In time the project will develop to allow the children to grow their own vegetables and then use them in the meal that they are providing.

Christine Rowland, who works on the Extended Services Initiative as a co-ordinator said: "The kids absolutely love it, and it is the best way for families to learn together."
