POLICE are appealing for witnesses following the theft of money from a pensioner in Haltwhistle yesterday afternoon (Thursday).
It happened around 1pm when two men went into the house of a woman in her 80s in the town and offered to fit a washer to a tap. While the men were in the house they took a quantity of cash. The woman was not hurt in any way.

The first was of large build, with black wavy hair, wearing a red jumper.

The second man had blond hair and was under 50.

It is believed they came from a van, although there is no description at this stage.

DI Steve Patrick, Northumberland Area Command, said: "This was a heartless theft targeting a vulnerable person and we are making numerous enquiries to trace those responsible."

People are reminded to check the identity of callers and to shut the door to them if they have to return inside. Anyone who is unhappy with the identity of a caller can contact police.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043.
