Forum will host dragon display

THE Year of the Dragon roars in to Newbiggin on Sunday with a day of activities on a Chinese theme.

A traditional dragon dance to mark Chinese New Year will be performed at the sports centre by Newcastle’s Long Project – Long is Chinese for dragon – and villagers will get in on the act too.

They will be making baby dragons and lanterns, discovering their Chinese zodiac signs and sampling oriental snacks.

The day ends at 5pm with a lantern procession to the beach for a mass release of their eco-friendly sky lanterns.

The afternoon, from 2pm to 5pm, is hosted by volunteer-run Newbiggin Arts Forum, whose chairperson, Laura Mathieson, said: “With activities for people of all ages, the arts forum committee are hoping for a good turnout.”

The forum, set up in 2006, provides workshops on subjects as diverse as ceramics, pop art, needlework, photography, creative writing and drumming.
