Made of sentimentality

FUNNY in places, but draped in more sentimentality and over-the-top clichés than you can shake a stick at, Made of Honor is not a film for those who hate predictability and love realism.

Made of Honor is a chick-flick turned on its head - it's the bloke version of My Best Friend's Wedding, and would have been great if it had achieved the laughs it promised.

The story revolves around ladies man Tom (Patrick Dempsey)and his best friend Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) who have the perfect friendship, and have never been attracted to each other.

Until, that is, she goes on a business trip to Scotland and comes back with Mr Perfect - whilst Tom is realising that Hannah is the girl for him after all.

Of course hilarity (broadly speaking) ensues, when Hannah returns from her trip with her new fiance Colin (Kevin McKidd) in tow, and there's clichs-a-plenty as Tom prepares to out shine Colin to win Hannah's heart.

The sub-plot is the best part of this film as we learn Tom's fear of commitment stems from father's (Sydney Pollack) inability to keep a wife.

Pollack is truly entertaining as we watch him agreeing the pre-nup as he prepares to marry his sixth trophy wife, who instructs the driver to circle the block until the pre-nup is agreed.

Mr Perfect Colin is an initially funny character, but when the action shifts to Scotland for the wedding, we discover Colin's practically royalty, as well as a natural athlete who can win the highland games standing on his head, and is of course the wealthy owner of the country's largest whiskey distillery in Scotland - all of which falls short of funny and the script does nothing to make up for the over-clichd action.

But it's not all bad. If you want a way to wile away the hours, and are fond of soppy cliche-driven films, then this may still interest you.

If, however, you want something more than a film about a man who can only say "I love you" to a dog, then I'd advise you give it a miss.
