Sex and the City is real winner

IT'S been four long years since Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha graced our screens - but the girls are back, and better than ever.

The film starts with a recap of what's happened to the girls since the TV show began, before Carrie starts flat-hunting with Big.

Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), is living in Brooklyn with husband Steve and five-year-old Brady, Charlotte (Kristin Davis), is living in New York with husband Harry and newly-adopted daughter Lily, and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is living in LA with Smith where she's living the high-life as his manager.

The film's trailer reveals a lot about the film we already know, but it's watching how and why the incidents occur that makes this film so moving.

There are so many parts of this film that were so good I was more than pleasantly surprised, as I wondered how the formula would work on the big screen.

But I needn't have worried - the chemistry between the girls is still there, no matter what rifts the press talk of, and there's obviously a strong team of writers behind the film that create the right mix between realism and escapism.

Full credit to Sarah Jessica Parker for looking about 70 years old on the girl's Mexican trip with no makeup, she really looked like she'd been crying solidly for about three days.

Some scenes worked just the way they were supposed to, and were incredibly upsetting and moving.

Back in New York, Carrie begins to get her life back on track and hires "Louise from St Louis" (Jennifer Hudson) as her assistant.

But as Carrie slowly begins to rebuild her life, the lives of her friends around her are falling apart.

Miranda and Steve separate, Charlotte falls pregnancy and Samantha doubts whether she wants a life with Smith (Jason Lewis) or if she wants to continue being the Samantha we know and love.

The New Year's Eve scene too will have even the hardest viewers reduced to tears as we watch friends rally together when there's nothing else to do.

For fans of the series - I don't even need to recommend this film, as they'll already be there queuing up to see how life pans out for the foursome.

And even if you've never watched the series, this film works so well as a standalone movie.

It's fantastic - far better than I had anticipated, and I'm already planning to go and see it again!
