ART students are being challenged to come up with bright ideas for a huge painting which would add life to their college building.

A multi-coloured mural will be painted on the side of the six-storey Northumberland College in Ashington.

The idea is to bring a splash of colour to the lives of local people, and give college students a valuable design and learning experience.

Paint company AkzoNobel, which is currently building a new £100m factory on the outskirts of the town, chose the college for its latest transformation scheme under its national Dulux ‘Let’s Colour’ project.

Carried out in association with Groundwork North East, creative art students at the college have spent two months coming up with designs for the mural.

They will pitch their ideas to local people, who will choose the winning design, at an event at the Ashington campus in College Road, on Thursday, January 17, between 6pm and 8pm.

The design will then be painted by level 3 painting and decorating students and unveiled at a ceremony in the spring.

Nigel Lister, director of curriculum at Northumberland College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to get involved with.

“Not only will they have the chance to put their creative talents to the test and work towards a real pitch, but the winning student’s design will be showcased on the college for years to come.”

Andy Jackson, project director at AkzoNobel, added: “The college’s large building is a key feature of the Ashington landscape and as AkzoNobel’s ambition is to positively colour as many lives as possible, this is the ideal location to have a big impact.”
