Project will help young musicians

BUDDING musicians, songwriters, composers and producers are being given their chance to shine thanks to a new music initiative.

Northumberland Creative and Performing Arts has joined forces with The Sage Gateshead, Newcastle Music Service and Newcastle College, with the help of The Arts Council England, to create Music Partnership North (MPN), which is looking to enrich the lives of all children and young people through engagement and participation in quality music activities.

And now, MPN is looking for a piece of music that represents the proud and illustrious history of the north east as part of its From the Border to the River project.

The piece of music must carry with it the spirit of inclusivity in that it must include as many children and young people from the region as possible, which could mean individual cellists or school choirs.

Once the piece has been chosen, the parts will be sent out to each participant to learn. Newcastle College will then visit each participant hub in their mobile recording unit, which features state of the art recording technology, to record specific parts.

Once all composite parts have been recorded it will be mixed at the college’s £21m Performance Academy on Rye Hill Campus, Scotswood Road. The college also boasts a working independent record label on campus, which is internationally distributed, selling it’s releases through the likes of iTunes, Amazon and Nokia.

Once the piece is completed the record will be released through the label, bringing the north east’s talent, ingenuity and ability to the world.

The closing date for submissions is Friday, March 1, for the start of recording in April.

Submissions can be sent as CDR to Scott Baker-Marflitt at Push Puzzle Records, Newcastle College, Performance Academy, Room 220, Scotswood Road, NE4 7SA. Or as MP3s to Push.puzzle@ncl-coll.ac.uk
