A VERY British Gangster takes an intimate look at a Sopranos-style family that's so true of the gangster film genre that it's easy to forget it's a documentary.
The new DVD is an all-access guide into one of Britain's most dangerous families.
For the very first time, a group of contemporary criminals open their lives to cameras to reveal a brutal mob-led world where the community relies on gangsters for justice, rather than police.
Investigative journalist turned director, Donal MacIntyre, gets incredible exclusive access to Manchester mob boss Dominic Noonan and his family, as he reveals stories about how he organised a prison riot while serving ten years for armed robbery - engineering his own 'kidnap' from a prison van so he could carry out two armoured car robberies in a day.
The access MacIntyre gets to the family is mind-blowing as he presents a close-up view of a world embroiled in kidnapping, torture, narcotics and murder.
The Noonan's seem relaxed telling life like it is, and MacIntyre too seems at ease asking probing and pointed questions.
The film follows the story of the mob boss over three years as he lurches from criminal trial to criminal trial, with shocking footage of what really goes on behind the scenes of the Manchester clan.
Noonan reveals how the people who repeatedly raped him while he was at school got their comeupance, and talks candidly about his homosexuality.
One of the more sobering moments sees Dominic's son Bugsy admitting he doesn't want to end up like his dad - as he starts another stretch behind bars.
A Very British Gangster is a compelling, yet frightening look behind the scenes of a real-life Tony Soprano.
