And when I read about
Knowing, I eagerly awaited its release.
In this horror/sci-fi flick, which has heavy religious undertones, the lovely Cage plays astrophysicist John Koestler who is the single father to ten-year-old Caleb.
Click here for Knowing trailerWhen Caleb's school celebrates its 50 year anniversary by opening a time capsule buried in 1959, all the children are given a letter from the past, with a drawing by a child on what they thought the futuremight be like.
But Caleb ends up with Lucinda Embry's letter - a page of seemingly random numbers - frantically scrawled by the tortured young girl who could hear things.
After studying the letter, Cage's eye is drawn to one set of numbers in particular - 0911012996 - and he realises the numbers hold the key to the major disasters affecting the world in the previous 50 years.
Caleb is then visited by a mysterious waxy-faced stranger who leaves black pebbles (bear with me), and Cage then enlists the help of Lucinda's daughter Diana and granddaughter Abby to work out what the remaining numbers mean.
Knowing is a blend of horror and sci-fi, and had me on the edge of my seat, terrified and enthralled right up until the final scenes.
The disaster scenes are both amazing and horrifying at the same time - the much publicised plane crash scene, which Cage said had him genuinely terrified, was incredibly traumatic to view, and the graphic train derailing, are both so horrifically realistic it is hard not to be disturbed by them.
But then it comes to the end and the whole thing unravels.
Just as Indiana Jones' latest offering was fantastic until the bitterly disappointing end that ruined it - this has gone the same way.
An otherwise incredible and thought-provoking film lost all credibility at the ridiculous and depressing doom-and-gloom ending, that looks as if they ran out of intelligent ideas that had filled the previous 90 minutes.
Up until the final scenes, this is one of the most gripping and powerful films I have seen in recent times, just sadly let down by a cop-out ending.
