RARELY does a film fill you with so much joy that you clap and cheer and get to your feet in a cinema.
But when I was watching Mamma Mia - in a packed cinema - I realised I was not alone, as hundreds of delighted viewers struggled to contain their joy.

Having never seen the theatre production of Mamma Mia, I was eagerly awaiting the release of the film, to see what all the hype had been about.

And I was far from disappointed.

These days musicals are too far and few between - Hairspray (one of my favourite films to date), was the last proper musical that did exactly what it was supposed to - entertain.

And Mamma Mia has hit the nail on the head again, with songs that you'll already know and want to sing along (out loud) to, as well as an endearing storyline and a fantastic cast.

Led by Donna - an incredible and faultless Meryl Streep who is clearly loving every minute of it - Mamma Mia tells the story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who's getting married to Skye (Dominic Cooper) and wants to find out who her dad is so he can walk her down the aisle.

Trouble is, there were "three men around the same time", and no one knows who the father is.

So Sophie invites all three - Colin Firth (Harry), Stellan Skarsgard (Bill) and Pierce Brosnan (Sam) - to her wedding in the hope of finding out which one her dad is.

And of course, its hilarious along the way as we watch Pierce Brosnan attempting to sing (I guarantee you will laugh), Meryl Streep writhing around on a roof, and a fantastic Julie Walters prancing about in a bra and a feather boa doing what she does best and getting the laughs.

One of the best moments is where Donna and her friends - Walters and Christine Baranski (who does a highly entertaining version of Does Your Mother Know), lead the women of the village down to the see in a chorus of Dancing Queen, and, then later on the boys get their chance for a chorus line with Lay All Your Love On Me where they dance about on the beach in flippers.

This is one of the best feel-good musical films of all time. There's no denying it and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

It will make you laugh out-loud none stop, it will make you want to sing, dance, cheer and applaud, and it may even make you cry.

It has everything a great film should have and more - it's perfect for the summer, it has a great cast, a great script, great songs (of course!), and is the ultimate feel-good film that will have you leaving the cinema with a chesire-cat grin plastered on your face.

It's so good I would happily have watched it again straight after I'd seen it the first time.

If you only see one film this summer - choose this one, just make sure you stay for the end credits though, otherwise you'll miss a few more cracking laughs - and a beautiful Colin Firth in lycra.
