FEW people will know the meaning of the word rendition - the process of illegally extraditing prisoners, but Rendition takes the viewer behind the scenes to reveal what could really be going on.
This thriller tells the story of an Egyptian-born American who suddenly disappears on his way back from a conference in South Africa.

Reese Witherspoon plays Isabella, the pregnant wife of scientist Anwar (Omar Metwally), who, suspected of terrorism is grabbed by the CIA and flown to Morrocco on the orders of US senator (Meryl Streep).

When in North Africa he is subjected to brutal torture by security chief Abasi Fawal (Igal Naor) in some truly disturbing and shocking scenes.

When a bomb goes off in the square killing a CIA agent, rookie Jake Gyllenhaal takes on the job for his first assignment to observe Fawal's interrogation.

Meanwhile a heavily pregnant Isabella contacts an old boyfriend who works in Washington in the hope of getting some answers to the whereabouts of her missing husband.

As if this wasn't enough, there's an engaging subplot featuring Fawal's daughter and her secret relationship.

This film clearly will not be to everyone's taste, but the storyline is fantastic and the acting is superb - Gyllenhaal really excels as the rookie whose morals threaten to lose him his job.

The final editing twist brings the film together fantastically well, and makes it not only a shocking portrayal of something that we know is going on, but a brilliantly crafted look at something we wouldn't normally get to see.
