EVEN the greatest of Hollywood actors sometimes has a bad day.
And it seems this was the case for the usually legendary Ben Stiller, whose magic seems to be missing from what could have been a fantastic film, but failed to hit the mark.

In The Heartbreak Kid, Stiller stars in his usual role as the geeky but funny and caring guy.

Eddie Cantrow (Stiller) is a businessman, who at 40 is neither married nor dating, and is being heavily pressurised by his dad Doc (Stiller's real life dad Jerry), and best friend Mac (Rob Corddry).

Eddie thinks he's found Miss Right in Lila (Malin Akerman) and after a few weeks of dating the pair get hitched, only for Eddie to realise that she is two sandwiches short of a picnic.

On the long ride to Mexico, Eddie gets to learn more about his new wife - and the more he learns the less he likes her.

He discovers Lila has a deviated septum from a drug problem she used to have, and various foodstuffs invariably get stuck in her nose/come out of her nose throughout the film.

Another foible that Eddie just can't stand, is his wife's inability to be quiet during the long journey - singing every word to every song played on the radio - (which hardly makes for the demonisation she receives from Stiller as I'm sure many people can relate...)

As the honeymoon from hell unfolds, along comes the pretty Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), who might just turn out to be Eddie's true love.

Stiller's fittingly amusing as he flits between the two women, as he attempts to trade in old for new.

Unlike his usual film roles, Stiller isn't as likeable as we're used to, but it's really the supporting cast who steal the show, particularly Rob Corddry and Jerry Stiller who have most of the best one-liners.

The Heartbreak Kid offers several good laughs, but also gives us some unnecessarily crude moments that don't seem in keeping with the rest of the film.

All in all, The Heartbreak Kid is an easy way to while away a few hours, but doesn't come close to the usual Stiller gold that audiences have come to know and love.
