THE hugely talented Will Smith shows what skill he has in new sci-fi thriller I Am Legend, where he holds the audience captive in what is virtually a one-man show.
Smith plays a military virologist who is seemingly the only survivor of a man-made virus that has wiped out mankind.

I Am Legend is based on the 1954 apocalyptic science fiction novel by Richard Matheson, and sees Robert Neville (Smith) battling to find a cure for a virus that has wiped out mankind.

Neville is the last human survivor following an outbreak of a virus that was originally designed as a cure for cancer, which either kills or mutates humans into 'dark seekers'.

Neville is immune to the virus and dedicates his life to finding a vaccine using his own blood, and patrols the streets of New York with only his dog Sam as company, hunting the 'infected'.

As dusk comes, Neville bolts himself into his house and huddles in a tin bath, as he provides us with flashbacks of his last days in New York, and his decision to send his family away in order to stay on and research a cure.

Neville broadcasts daily radio messages in search of fellow survivors, as he hunts and traps the zombie creatures to capture them to find a way to reverse the virus' effects.

Then, in his most desperate hour, some survivors finally turn up with talk of a survivors colony, but it seems the dark seekers have found Neville's home...

Smith delivers an extraordinary performance as a man slowly coming apart under the strain of no human contact, and his mental decline is brilliantly depicted - he positions mannequins in the DVD rental shop where he can chat to them - and watches recorded TV news while he eats his breakfast in an effort to retain some normality in his life.
