NEWCASTLE United are being linked, along with Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Sunderland, with a move for Reading striker Leroy Lita.
According to a report in the News of the World newspaper, United are in a four-team race for the Championship player.
The England Under-21 star is keen for a move to the Premier League following the Berkshire side's relegation last May.
United are still uncertain of what their striking options will be once the new season kicks-off in August.
Michael Owen only has a season left on his contract, Obefemi Martins is making noises on wanting a move to Arsenal, Shola Ameobi is being offered for transfer and Mark Viduka is struggling with an Achilles injury.
Lita is being valued at around £4m.
