NEWCASTLE United striker Obafemi Martins is heading back to Nigeria after the death of his mother.
The star's mother, 62-year-old Alhaja, is reported to have died of shock in her car after trying to escape a petrol tanker that caught fire near her Lagos apartment.
She collapsed in the early hours of Thursday and her death was confirmed later in the day in hospital.
United immediately offered Martins compassionate leave to allow him to head back home.
The Magpies' No. 9 will now miss United's pre-season friendly on Saturday with Doncaster with the funeral due to take place Friday.
He could also be a doubt for next week's training camp in Mallorca and games against Hertha Berlin and Real Mallorca.
The former Inter Milan forward missed international games for Nigeria back in February after his mother Alhaja fell ill and he had her flown to Newcastle for treatment.
