KEVIN Keegan is stepping up his bid to bring sign a left-back, with AZ Alkmaar's Sebastien Pocognoli his latest target.
Keegan – who played Charles N'Zogbia out of position at full-back against Manchester United – is determined to strengthen in the position before the transfer window shuts at midnight on September 1.

And the 21-year-old – on his way back from the Olympics, where he helped Belgium to the semi-finals – has emerged as a candidate.

Newcastle are understood to have tabled a £6m bid for Pocognoli, who joined the Dutch club a year ago from Racing Genk and is under contract at the DSB Stadium until 2012.

United have been frustrated so far in their attempts to sign a left-back to compete with Jose Enrique for a place in Keegan's team.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez refused to entertain a bid to bring Emiliano Insua to St James's Park on loan.

And Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Ince is determined to hold on to Stephen Warnock, another Newcastle target.
