Platinum pair Jim and Evelyn Oakley have celebrated an incredible 70 years of marriage.

The happy couple married on August 10, 1946, and due to the housing shortage at the time they lived with Evelyn’s parents in First Avenue, Blyth.

Jim worked at the Blyth shipyard, but a new life in Australia beckoned through a government scheme, and the pair emigrated with their three-year-old son Edward.

They arrived in Sydney on the converted troop carrier SS Cameronia in 1951.

However, they never forgot their roots and returned to Blyth to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1971 with their two daughters.

They now have four children, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

And they continue to keep active, enjoying dancing, bingo and lodge functions.

The couple celebrated their milestone anniversary with family and friends.
