Members of the Newcastle Eagles basketball team, led by head coach Fabulous Flournoy, pictured, put children in Years 5 and 6 through their paces on the court and in the classroom.

Two first-team players and community coach Anthony Sampson joined Fab at the primary-years academy to promote the squad’s Hoops for Health programme.

Anthony coached the children in ball skills, Ross Wilson combined classroom circuit training with a lesson in keeping their hearts healthy, Joe Chapman explained the dangers of smoking and Joel Medori taught them the benefits of good nutrition.

Year 5 teacher Emma Barker said: “The Eagles showed the children how much fun they can have keeping fit, enjoying a good diet and staying healthy.

“The students absolutely loved it.”

Fab, who coaches Britain’s most successful basketball team ever, explained that the club had taken Hoops for Health to 122 schools across the North East.

He added: “We run the biggest schools programme of any professional sports club in the region. With healthy lifestyle messages the younger you are taught and learn it the better.”

Previously, PE teachers from schools across Northumberland and students from Bede Academy Secondary years have received coaching from Fabulous Flournoy at Bede.

Simon McAree, director of sport at Bede Academy, added: “We are extremely grateful to Fabulous Flournoy and his team for bringing the programme to our Primary Years. It was a superb day that the children will long remember.”
