A hard-working trainee scooped a trip to Hong Kong after being named Apprentice of the Year.

Northumberland College student Macauley Wake beat off competition from more than 500 other apprentices to take the title for Northern Gas Networks.

The 20-year-old, from Leeds, works for MC&C Utilities, a sub-contractor, and studies at the Ashington college through a block-release scheme.

He was put forward for the award by tutor Thomas Lilburn.

Mr Lilburn said: “Macauley is a dedicated, genuine young man who is always focused on the job and working towards a better future for himself. Students like him are great to work with.”

The college is the only one in the region to provide Level 2 Gas Industry Apprenticeship training and is currently working with 14 apprentices from the North East, Cumbria and Yorkshire.

As well as providing training, the college shortlisted the apprenticeship candidates.
