A local publican has been named a regional winner in a community heroes award programme after raising £10,000 in memory of one of her regulars.
Sharon Herron, who runs The Keel Row just outside Seaton Delaval, spearheaded a fundraising campaign that raised £10,000 for cancer charity Macmillan.
And now she has been recoginised in the Enterprise Community Hero Pub Awards North East 2014.
Sharon said: “We lost our dear friend Peter Almond to cancer last year.
“Macmillan had helped him throughout his eight-year battle against the disease, and by the time he died we had raised £7,000.
“He was so proud that he could give something back to others going through the same as him.
“Our biggest fundraiser was on the anniversary of his death.
“We raised £3,000 on that day alone and that took us to £10,000.”
Sharon has won £5,000 as the north east regional winner, and now has a chance to win £10,000 at the national final, on October 22, against 17 other regional winners.
