Awards for youths’ work in community

AN AWARDS evening will be the centre piece of a packed programme of events put together by officers from Northumberland County Council’s participation team.

Local MPs, county councillors and representatives from voluntary organisations from across the county will join a talented and committed group of 13 to 19-year-olds to celebrate the success of a string of projects carried out in 2011.

All projects shortlisted for awards involve young people engaging in activities that have improved their community by making decisions to bring about positive change.

On the same day a workshop and exhibition event will be held at Longhirst Hall, near Morpeth, from 1.30pm to 5pm.

This will give young people and organisations from throughout the county the opportunity to find out more about a variety of Northumberland-based community projects and participation events.

A ‘Young Apprentice’ event will also run for a group of young people from Friday, January 13, until Sunday, January 15.

Young people will take part in tasks, team development and learning exercises in the spirit of the BBC show The Apprentice.

The council’s executive member for children and young people, Coun Lesley Rickerby, pictured, said: “This busy weekend is a chance for us to celebrate all the fantastic achievements of those young people who have been taking part in group and individual projects across the county.

“It’s also an opportunity for local organisations to find out more about the inspiring work that young people in Northumberland are capable of.”
