A baby was taken to hospital after allegedly being picked out of a buggy and thrown to the ground.
A man was arrested after an incident in Woodhorn Crescent, Newbiggin, at 3.24pm Friday.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “It appears that a mother was in the street with her child in a buggy when she saw a man apparently in some distress.
“She approached him and engaged him in conversation, at which point he grabbed the baby from the buggy and threw the child to the ground.
“The man then left the scene.”
The child was taken to be checked over at Wansbeck General Hospital for what have been described as minor injuries.
A 16-year-old local boy was arrested nearby on suspicion of assault and is currently in police custody.
Officers are currently making enquiries in the area and are speaking to witnesses to find out what exactly has taken place.
