A hero who crawled his way into a burning building to rescue an elderly couple took the Good Neighbour award.
Mark Jones, from Ashington, was on his way to work when he saw smoke coming out of a house and spotted a pair of feet and some pyjama bottoms sticking out of the door.
He didn’t hesitate, went inside to rescue the elderly gentleman and took him to safety.
Then he went back inside to rescue the man’s wife.
The couple were taken to hospital but unfortunately the woman died four weeks later from a heart condition.
In recognition of his heroic actions towards his neighbours, Mark is to receive a Royal Humane Society Testimonial.
Mark’s neighbour Sonia Hopkinson picked up the award on his behalf as he is on holiday.
She said: “When he heard that he was going to get this award he said he didn’t want it, anyone would do it. He’s such a lovely man and he really deserves this.”
Also nominated: The Aid for Aidan campaign, which is aiming to make a house a home for Aidan Jackowiak Smith, and Celia Darling, from Seahouses, who gives her time to others.
