A CHARITY which raised funds to enhance the quality of care in hospitals in Northumberland has been relaunched.

Bright Northumbria is the new name of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s registered charity, with the new look being unveiled at roadshows at Wansbeck and North Tyneside general hospitals last week.

Funds raised for the charity, which was formed in 1998, go towards improving the hospital environment, buying specialist equipment and providing training for staff – on top of funds from the trust.

Ian McMinn, chairman of the trust’s charitable funds committee, said: “The new look – Bright – will help raise awareness of the exceptional work it does to provide the little extras that make a huge difference to patients and staff.

“Over the years we have been able to use the money for a wide variety of initiatives.

“For example, providing new diagnostic equipment to fast track results for cancer patients, sleep alarm monitors for the special care baby unit and non-slip slippers for elderly patients at risk of falling.

“It has also supported the introduction of peaceful spaces award from the ward environment at Wansbeck, North Tyneside and Berwick hospitals for the relatives of patients who are at the end of their lives.

“We’re always overwhelmed by the generosity of our local communities in supporting our charity.

“Without their donations we would not be able to support the work of our services in hospitals and the community to deliver the very best of care for our patients.

“We look forward to the years ahead under our new name.”

Part of the charity’s activities is the Healing Arts programme, which uses art as a therapeutic medium to improve the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff.

A series of exhibitions are helping to relaunch the charity.

Flower paintings by artist Lisa Rippingale are displayed at Wansbeck General Hospital.

At North Tyneside General Hospital, photographs of north east landscapes and wildlife by Colin and Ian Mason and artwork from people living in Northumberland and North Tyneside are featured.
