Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable has given his assurances that the A1 will be dualled between Morpeth and Alnwick as announced this morning.

He joined MP Sir Alan Beith and parliamentary candidate Julie Pörksen on the road at Felton this morning to endorse the Coalition Government’s commitment to a £290million upgrade to the road.

He said earlier: “I can guarantee as far as it is possible to guarantee. The money has been set aside, the commitment has been made and I know Sir Alan Beith has had enormous frustration that previous governments have talked vaguely about this and not done it.

“It is part of a whole series of road improvements in the North East, focussed on the A1 and this is the important one.”

He added: “Long before David Cameron came on the scene, we had a Liberal Democrat in Berwick setting out the case for these road improvements and they are now happening.”
