A Blyth nursery is blooming after picking up an award.

Perennial Favourites were presented with the Small Employer of the Year award by Northumberland College.

Owner Adam Greenwold took over the Ridley Park-based nursery three years ago and has watched it grow, with untrained Xyron Brown, 24, who has since graduated in horticulture.

Mr Brown said: “Adam persevered with me and gave me lots of help and encouragement to help me complete my course. He had complete faith in me and managed to help me turn my life around and to graduate.”

Mr Greenwold then took on 17-year-old apprentice Kirsty Allen, who said: “Its great working with Adam and the team. I am now really enjoying my apprenticeship.”

Mr Greenwold said: “This is a very hands-on business. Looking after staff and customers alike can be very challenging, as well as rewarding.

“Taking on an apprentice has its own challenges but you have to persevere with young people, encourage them to go to college, as well as giving hands on, on the job training.

“This award is as much my apprentices as it is mine and naturally we are delighted to have won it.”
