Bedlington Station electronics firm Welwyn Components is continuing its policy of recruiting engineering apprentices by taking on Devon Johnson.

The 19-year-old, of Bedlington, is also keeping it in the family as his mum and stepdad work at the Welwyn Electronics Park plant too and have notched up almost 70 years’ service between them.

Dawn Prior, human resources director for the company, part of the TT Electronics group, said “The approach of developing our own talent and providing learning opportunities had stood the business in good stead in the past, and we’re pleased there’s a consistent renewed energy and focus to drive development in this way.

“The apprentices are all making good progress at college and positively contribute to our business.”

The company launched its apprenticeship programme in 2013.

It joined forces with Arch, Northumberland County Council’s development company, and the Regional Growth Fund to get its apprenticeship programme up and running.
