Event to help out new businesses

A Stakeford man is lending a helping hand to people who are thinking about starting up their own business.

Derek Shiel, who launched NEDents, a paintless dent removal business that repairs minor dents and creases in all makes and models of car, will be sharing his experience of starting up his business at the ‘Show Me The Money’ event at St James’s Park, Newcastle, on Sunday, June 22, from 10am until noon.

The event, organised by enterprise agency TEDCO as part of the Ready for Business start-up programme, which aims to create 900 new jobs for the north east, will feature business owners who have started their own business with help from the programme together with a team of advisers who can help navigate routes and open doors to funding.

Derek, a retired policeman, said: “I met someone who had received help through Ready for Business and listening to them talk about how they felt in the early days and finding out about the support they received was really interesting as they seemed to be describing the position I was in exactly.

“Knowing that Ready for Business had already helped people like me gave me a huge amount of confidence that they were the right people to put me on track and make sure that my business had the best possible start.”

Ready for Business is a nationwide scheme launched in 2012 to help business start-ups with investment from the Regional Growth Fund and a partnership with Barclays Bank.

Bill Hartshorn, business advisor at TEDCO, said: “We understand that the financial landscape for businesses is currently very difficult and our aim is to use the knowledge and experience of our partners to prepare business start-ups to access finance through the banking system and other funding sources, offering help and support at every stage.

“By understanding the requirements and steps it takes to secure finance, we are in essence trying to unlock the bottleneck which could help hundreds of businesses successfully set up and grow across the region.”
