The contractor responsible for delivering the three new facilities at the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) in Blyth, has won one of the UK construction industry’s most prestigious award titles.
Shepherd Construction has received the top accolade of Supreme Award at this year’s Construction News awards as well as winning the Project of the Year (£10m-£50m) category for the pioneering work undertaken at Narec.
The project involved the development of three ground-breaking structures that are now being used for the on-shore testing of next generation offshore wind technology.
Shepherd completed the final of the three structures six weeks early in May this year, enabling Narec to become the world’s leading facility for the testing of offshore wind turbines, wind turbine blades and tidal turbines.
This is the third accolade Shepherd has received for its work at Narec, having already won the Constructing Excellence North East project award and the Institution of Civil Engineers North East Robert Stephenson Award earlier this year.
Narec’s operations director Tony Quinn said: “Right from the start there was a keen desire from the whole team to make Narec’s vision of a world-leading facility for offshore renewables a reality.
“Given the enormous technical challenges combined with an aggressive programme, I am thrilled the project team has received another significant industry recognition for their hard work and achievements.”
