A busy Morpeth fish and chip shop is in the running to be named Britain’s best.
Fabulous fryer Andrew Watt and his team at Carlo’s of Morpeth have made it onto the shortlist of the National Fish and Chip Shop Awards.
And the New Market business is vying for the most prestigious title of all – Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.
Carlo’s has already made it through a mystery-diner round to be named among the top six in the northeast section of the Seafish awards and now it faces intense scrutiny for the chance to take the top prize at a ceremony in London in January.
Mr Watt said: “We got into the top seven for Best Newcomer last year, but this year we are going for Best Takeaway, which is the most prestigious award of the ten categories.
“In the next month or two, the judges will go through the shop with a fine toothcomb.
“I’ve heard they even go so far as to swipe a cotton bud to check for bacteria.
“I’m absolutely delighted to get this recognition. The staff here work so hard to try to make it the best fish and chip shop we can.
“We all work very hard for the customers and to be recognised for it is fantastic.”
The business opened in Morpeth three years ago and employs eight staff.
The other North East shortlisted shops are in Barnard Castle, North Shields, Rotherham, Selby and Bridlington.
