A Women’s Institute from south east Northumberland has celebrated the 100th anniversary of the organisation.

Newbiggin Women’s Institute celebrated the WI’s milestone birthday with the support of Council Horticulturalists who have depicted the event in a flowerbed opposite to Memorial Park.

Pam Thompson from Newbiggin WI, said: “The WI has a proud history of contributing to the wellbeing and advancement of women in a happy and constructive atmosphere and the Newbiggin branch has played a significant role within the community for almost a century.”

The Women’s Institute movement in Britain was formed during the First World War in 1915 and will celebrate its 100th birthday this year.
